Cabinet approves second-phase plan to boost digital content industry

The Executive Yuan approved on December 19 a second-phase five-year plan to boost the country's digital content industry, with the goal of raising the industry's production value to NT$600 billion (US$27.44 billion) by 2011.

The plan, to be implemented between 2007 and 2011, is the continuation of a similar plan adopted by the Cabinet in May 2002 that was aimed at laying a sound foundation for the industry by taking advantage of information technology and the popularity of the Internet, Cabinet officials said.

In the second phase, the Cabinet will focus on the development of the domestic market and cross-industry cooperation to facilitate the formation of an industrial chain and the creation of brand names, by providing incentives such as preferential loans and tax deductions, the officials said.

They said the Cabinet aims to enhance the country's innovative entertainment and multimedia applications and make Taiwan a successful world model for the development of digital economy.

To achieve the goal, total investment in the digital content industry should reach NT$25 billion per year and international cooperation projects should be valued at NT$10 billion per year over the next five years, the officials said.

By 2011, exports should account for more than 30 percent of the total production of the digital content industry, with a four-fold growth in the quantity of copyrighted products, they said.
