Taiwan begins building mobile wireless online envrionment

Taiwan will start its "Mobile Taiwan " program at the beginning of 2007 in an effort to build a "boundless" Internet communication network on the island to facilitate mobile and wireless online services, the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) said on December 30.

The government will write a budget of NT$10 billion (US$306.9 million) to promote the program that will include a project to build 1,228 km of conduit for broadband lines around the country.

The program was formed with the goal of helping domestic manufacturers in the information communication sector upgrade their capacity with complete and convenient infrastructure for online services, and of promoting Taiwan 's ratings in global "mobile Internet" prevalence and city competitiveness competitions.

According to the CEPD, the government has appropriated nearly NT$10 billion over the past few years for local administrations and businesses to construct broadband line conduit and facilities for mobile Internet application services.

The work has borne fruit, with the number of wireless online users surging from 1.95 million people in 2005 to 2.5 million in 2006, CEPD officials said.
