Business turnover for three major science parks in Taiwan could reach NT$1.8 trillion (US$54.54 billion) in 2006, with Central Taiwan Science Park showing the most stunning growth, an official of the National Science Council (NSC) said on December 28.

NSC Deputy Minister Tai Chien also estimated that turnover for the three parks will reach NT$2 trillion in 2007 during a year-end gathering with the news media.

Tai said the three science parks' business performance is excellent, saying their turnover in the first 10 months reached NT#1.44 trillion, up 2.96 percent over the whole of 2005. It is estimated that business turnover will reach 1.8 trillion by the end of December, or up 28 percent.

Using the first 10 months as a comparison, Tai said Hsinchu Science Park 's turnover was NT$930.2 billion, up 17.88 percent from NT$789.1 billion in the same period last year, and estimated it will reach NT$1.13 trillion for the whole year.

Business turnover of Central Taiwan Science Park was NT$138.19 billion, up 244.18 percent from NT$40.15 billion in the same period last year, with an estimated annual turnover of NT$170 billion.

Southern Taiwan Science Park registered a business turnover of NT$372.26 billion from NT$272.07 billion, up 36.83 percent in the first 10 months. It is estimated that it could reach NT$500 billion for the whole year.

On the introduction of new investment projects, Tai said 81 manufacturers were approved this year to set up shop in the parks, greater than the original estimate of 50 manufacturers, Tai said.

He noted that the number of manufacturers stationed in the three parks has reached 776, including 475 in Hsinchu Science Park, 103 in Central Taiwan Science Park and 198 in Southern Taiwan Science Park. The three science parks have created 185,091 job opportunities, he added.
