University graduates becoming backbone in industrial sector

A government survey released on December 18 showed that 42.5 percent of people employed in industrial and service industries last year were college graduates.

According to the survey, which was conducted by the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), it was the first time the number of employees who were university graduates exceeded those only with an educational degree from high school or vocational school, which registered 41.1 percent in 2005. People with a junior high school education or below accounted for 16.4 percent of the workforce in the two sectors.

A DGBAS official attributed the improvement in the quality of the workforce to the popularization of universities and colleges in recent years.

According to DGBAS statistics, the number of employees in industrial and service industries reached 5,997,000 as of the end of 2005, with employers with working experience of one to five years accounting for 42.3 percent of the total, followed by those of more than five years, with 39.1 percent.

Employers with working experience of less than one year accounted for 18.6 percent of the total number employed, the DGBAS official said, adding that Taiwan employees had worked for an average of 6.1 years in their respective professional fields as of the end of 2005.

The survey also found that employees in private water, electricity and fuel companies had worked for an average 14.2 years in these fields, the longest among all private sectors, while employees in lodging and restaurant industries worked for an average 3.2 years in the sector, the lowest of them all.

On the age of employees, people employed in industrial and service industries were an average age of 36.5 years in 2005, compared to 43.4 years of age registered in public and state-run enterprises.

Among private companies, water, electricity and fuel enterprises had employees with the highest average age of 43.6 years, followed by 41.1 years of age for the mining sector, 40.6 years of age for the real estate industry. Employees of the lodging and restaurant sector had the lowest average age -- 32.8 years old, according to DGBAS statistics.
