Taiwan to post medical delegations to Marshall and Solomon Islands

Taiwan will post two permanent medical missions to the Marshall Islands and Solomon Islands in the middle of 2007 to offer free medical services in these two Pacific countries, Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang said on December 27.

Huang made the announcement at a year-end tea party held by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

According to Huang , Taiwan has dispatched 16 mobile medical missions to its diplomatic allies this year, with 11 heading to Pacific countries, four to Central and South American countries, and one to Africa, mobilizing some 130 medical personnel from Taiwan .

So far in 2006, Taiwan 's mobile medical delegations have offered help to more than 35,000 people abroad in allied countries, and the assistance has been well received and respected in these nations, Huang added.

Government Information Office Minister Cheng Wen-tsang noted that although Taiwan is not a member of the World Health Organization, it surely is a great contributor to world health.
