Cross-strait visits via 'mini three links' total 278,000: DGBAS

People from both side of Taiwan Strait made 278,000 visits via the "mini three links" in the first 10 months of 2006, an increase of 18.3 percent over the same period of 2005, according to Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) figures released on December 30.

The "mini three links" refer to the postal, transport and trade links between Taiwan 's outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu, and Xiamen and Fuzhou harbors in China 's Fujian Province . The links were implemented in 2001.

Among the visits, Taiwan residents made 245,000 visits to China via the links in the first 10 months, accounting for 88 percent of the total, while Chinese residents made 32,000 visits to Taiwan in the same period, representing a year-on-year growth of 109.5 percent.

During this period, Taiwanese and Chinese ships made 3,629 voyages via the links, a decrease of 23 voyages over the year-earlier period, with Taiwanese ships heading to China increasing by 483 voyages, while Chinese ships visiting Taiwan decreased by 506 voyages. Of the figure, the number of voyages from Fuzhou to Matsu in the first 10 months reached only 464, a year-on-year decrease of 647.

Referring to cross-strait postal and telecommunication links, statistics of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications show that people of both sides made 530 million telephone calls in the first nine months of this year, an increase of 15.1 percent over the same period of last year, with the time of telephone communication reaching a total of 1.79 billion minutes, a year-on-year growth of 10.3 percent.

However, cross-strait communications by letters, affected by the popularity of telephone calls and e-mail, shrank by 25.5 percent over the same period of 2005.
