MOFA approves application for China wafer fabs

The Ministry of Economic Affairs' Investment Commission approved on December 27 applications by Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) and ProMos Technologies to move their 8-inch wafer fabs to China .

  PSC has applied with the ministry to remit US$410 million to China for the investment project using 0.25-micron or larger processes, while ProMos has applied to remit US$365 million for a similar project.

  Officials at the commission said the two companies need to present proof showing that their 12-inch wafer fabs in Taiwan have entered mass production before they can apply for export permits with the Bureau of Foreign Trade to move their 8-inch wafer production facilities to China .

  Also approved on December 27 was an application by Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. to invest US$ 600 in China 's Global Advanced Packaging Technology.
