Baseball star awarded top culture medal

Taiwan 's baseball hero, Wang Chien-ming, was awarded on December 28 with the first-class Culture Medal by the Ministry of Education, becoming the 17th recipient of the top honor for his contributions to the country's educational sector.

Wang is also the first person to receive the medal for his great contribution toward the promotion of Taiwan 's sports culture, and the youngest among all medalists so far, including late physicist Wu Ta-you, who headed the Academia Sinica 1983-1994 and was called "the father of Chinese physics" for promoting scientific development in Chinese societies.

Wang, born and educated in Tainan, southern Taiwan, is considered the "glory of Taiwan" after he achieved a record 19 victories as pitcher for the New York Yankees in last season's U.S. Major League baseball games.

At the award ceremony, Minister of Education Tu Cheng-sheng praised Wang as Taiwan 's best representative, saying he has helped boost Taiwan 's international image throughout the world with his good name in baseball.
