US public TV station to broadcast Taiwan travel features

Starting with public television stations in Miami and neighboring regions, some 400 public television stations will be showing two 30-minute programs featuring Taiwan's scenic spots and unique cuisine, as recommended by well-known Taiwanese residing in the United States -- such as Yankees pitcher Chien-ming Wang, according to a CNA report on December 26.

The Taiwan travel features are part of American TV producer Burt Wolf's "Travels and Traditions" series, which introduces the history, culture, customs, food and festivals of many interesting locations.

Impressed by the people and culture when he visited Taiwan 15 years ago, Wolf has made constant visits over the past years, and produced TV features on Taiwan and the city of Taipei two years ago. The two-part show, "A Sense of Place," was filmed in August and September of 2006.

He said he found inspiration in producing "A Sense of Place" from Taiwanese who have successfully established themselves in the highly competitive American society, such as Yankees pitcher Chien-ming Wang and forensic expert Henry Lee.

Earlier 2006, he interviewed six Taiwanese residing and working in the U.S. -- Chien-min Wang, Henry Lee, Dancer Fang-yi Hsu, industrialist Walter Wang of the Formosa Plastics Group, HIV/AID researcher David Ho. He asked their favorite foods and scenic spots in Taiwan .

Wolf said that the achievements of these celebrated figures have enlightened many people, so their recommendations regarding Taiwan travel may also be of great interest.

Based on the recommendations, Wolf and his film crew traveled to Taiwan in August and spent several weeks shooting scenery in Taroko Gorge in Hualien, Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan , Wulai Hot Springs in northern Taiwan , temples around the island and the National Palace Museum . They also caught scenes of food preparation in famous dumpling restaurants and traditional ceremonies on Confucius' birthday.
