'Learning Taiwan through travel' tour routes unveiled

The National Youth Commission unveiled on December 24 20 travel routes around the island to help young people at home and abroad to further understand Taiwan's culture and customs during the upcoming winter vacation.

The "Learning Taiwan Through Travel" program set up to encourage local and overseas students to take in-depth tours in early 2007 will offer participants the rare opportunity to observe in-depth the island and its people, officials from the commission said.

According to the officials, the 20 routes have been divided into four categories, namely exploring Taiwan 's art and history, observing local people's livelihood, discovering Taiwan 's ecosystem, and learning about Taiwan 's indigenous people.

Depending on which route they choose, the officials said, participants will either travel around the island county of Penghu or wander through the eastern county of Taitung on bicycle, shoot the rapids in a canoe on a river in Hualien County , get a close-up view of indigenous people's life by staying in their homes, or survey the island's different wetlands. One of the tour routes will give participants the chance to experience something most people would prefer to avoid: staying in a jail to experience the life of inmates.

Instead of traveling abroad for learning, local students can learn about the colorful aspects of the island's culture, customs and natural environment by enrolling in the program which offers top quality trips at the lowest possible prices, the officials said.

In light of the great success of a similar program during the summer vacation this year, the officials said they are certain the program during the upcoming winter vacation will be very popular, urging students who are interested in the program to visit the commission's Web site at www.youthhub.net.tw/youthtravel.
