Beijing's
proposed unification law is unacceptable to both Taiwan and the international
community, a spokesman for the Executive Yuan claimed on September 3.
Chen Chi-mai said the draft of the
unification law worked out by Beijing scholars provides Beijing the option of
using force to take Taiwan should Taiwan declare independence, should any
foreign country interfere with Taiwan by force or occupy Taiwan, or should
Taiwan postpone infinitely unification with mainland China.
Chen said the
proposal betrays Beijing's desire to justify the use of force as a means of
annexing Taiwan. Taiwan should take this threat seriously, he added. He also
cautioned the public to be on guard against psychological, public opinion and
legal warfare, the so-called "three warfares" undertaken by Beijing against
Taiwan.
Chen said
Beijing has made the three non-military operations its top political priority in
an attempt to break down the Taiwan people's willingness to fight. He urged the
people to heed President Chen Shui-bian's warning of Beijing's military threat
against Taiwan, and called on Beijing to "reciprocate" Chen's Sept. 1 decision
to halt a military drill by giving up its design of annexing Taiwan by force.
