The
government has envisioned three major goals for the development of the country's
pharmaceutical industry over the next 10 years, including turning the island
into a biomedicine research, development and manufacturing stronghold, Vice
Premier Tsai Ing-wen said on November 30.
The other two goals are making Taiwan into a medical and pharmaceutical
research and development center for major diseases in Asia, as well as a gene
pharmacology research and development center in Asia, the vice premier said.
She made the remarks while attending the annual conference of the
International Research-based Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association in
Taipei
.
To achieve the goals, the government should step up multinational
cooperation in the bio-tech industry, assist local manufacturers, learn from the
systems used in the industrialized nations to carry out a comprehensive review
on statutes regarding the promotion of the industry as well as company law and
regulations governing the listing of companies so as to attract investment by
local and foreign manufacturing companies by creating a sound investment
environment.
Tsai said the government has listed the bio-tech sector as one of the
priority industries and has included it in the list of emerging strategic
industries that are provided with government incentives.
She said that the government has invested around NT$55 billion (US$1.66
billion) in the bio-tech industry over the past four years, adding that the
bio-tech industry currently generates NT$160 billion in revenue. She estimated
total revenues will hit NT$320 billion in 2010.
